American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center

Gary Suson was a WTC photographer and eyewitness. Read his book, REQUIEM, Barnes and Noble Books, 2002. "Reverend Lyndon Harris stands with FDNY B.C. Chief Steve Zaderiko as he prays with firefighters and construction workers over flag-draped civilian remains".
Read Langewiesche's quote, above right;

Photographic Evidence Proves:
Civilian Remains WERE given Flag-Drapped Ceremonials

One of Many Langewiesche's Factual Errors: (see photo on left)

"These tensions flared especially over the differing treatment of human remains – on the one extreme, the elaborate flag-draped ceremonials that the firemen accorded their own dead, and on the other, the jaded ‘bag ‘em and tag ‘em’ approach that they took to civilians." William Langewiesche, American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center, Farrar Straus, 2002 (p.70)

See more published photos by Gary Suson that dramatically illustrate that Langewiesche's statement (above) is factually incorrect.

Dozens of Clergy Testify As Eyewitnesses...
Langewiesche's Facts are Wrong.

"Chaplains, clergy, from all different faiths, we see that each body, and each body part, was treated with equal reverence and respect. How dare Mr. Langewiesche say otherwise.” Father Brian Jordan of St. Francis of Assisi Church speak. NY1 News Feb. 05, 2003.

"Fire Department of New York Chaplain Christopher Kennan, who worked at ground zero, disputed those allegations. All remains found at ground zero, he said, were prayed over, placed on stretchers, draped in American flags and escorted out of the ruins with an honor guard." by Chaka Ferguson. Firefighters Protest New Book

By Ben Amato
Newfield High School

Language Arts Component
Today’s lesson has a dual focus. The first is to examine the controversy surrounding the new book detailing alleged crimes committed by rescue workers at Ground Zero. The second is to reflect and comment upon the constitutional issue of freedom of the press. Do authors have the right to make accusations and create conflicts without documented proof? What evidence is needed? Do safeguards exist to ensure that what we read is true, honest and just?
