The New York City Book Awards, established in 1996, honor current authors who have captured the essence of New York City. This year's jury members are Constance Rogers Roosevelt, chair; Barbara Cohen, Jules Cohn, Hope Cooke, Joan K. Davidson, Joshua B. Freeman, Christopher Gray, Roger Pasquier, Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, Jonathan Rosen, Daniel M. Rossner, and Wendy Wasserstein.
The ceremony and reception honors the award-winning authors and their publishers. Library members are cordially invited, but space is limited. Contact the Events Office at 212-288-6900 x230 or sholliday@nysoclib.org by April 24 to place a reservation.

Today’s lesson has a dual focus. The first is to examine the controversy surrounding the new book detailing alleged crimes committed by rescue workers at Ground Zero. The second is to reflect and comment upon the constitutional issue of freedom of the press. Do authors have the right to make accusations and create conflicts without documented proof? What evidence is needed? Do safeguards exist to ensure that what we read is true, honest and just?

Chanting “liar, liar,” more than 100 city firefighters showed up at a Manhattan book-signing Monday night to denounce an author who wrote that firefighters engaged in looting at the World Trade Center.
